2005-01-21 : Women in Black/Dreams of German Hot Dog Vendors
I went to my first protest yesterday afternoon/evening. My friend pinkoid and I were part of the Women in Black movement (not that there seemed to be THAT many people there doing that)..Go to www.womeninblack.net for more details. We tryed to emulate full Victorian Mourning Garb. Pinkoid even made a cool hat complete with gauzy black veils in front and back. I think we sort of stood out from the other protesters in our outfits (Now it makes it sound like we did it to be fashionable, which is not entirely true, ha ha!) Anyways, many people asked to take our pictures which was sort of flattering and unnerving to me. There was very little news coverage of the event as far as I could tell. Figures. The protest march from the EMU on campus down to the Federal Building was disorganized, which irritated pinkoid and I to no end. All printed information WE saw said that the March would be leaving campus at 4:00, but they ended up leaving at 3:30, so we didn't get to participate in the March. We got a ride with one of pinkoid's friends down to the Federal Building, and there were probably 400-500 protesters (I really have a hard time estimating crowds of people) and there were speakers (I couldn't understand a word they said..bad sound system) There were young college girls in tank tops (it was in the 60's until the sun went down) with signs who were shrieking at the crowded intersection. They seemed more like they thought they were at a sexy car wash, which was sort of funny. There were the typical hippies and their drum circles and many other people that defy classification. Pinkoid had a sign, but I didn't. I just held a candle, but at some point this guy who was leaving the protest asked if I wanted his sign, so I took it. It said "I'm dreading 4 more years" and the word "dread" coupled with my somber outfit seemed to turn my whole thing into a morbid joke. People keep walking by me and laughing at the sign and the way I was dressed and giving me the thumbs up. It was funny. Pinkoid and I didn't make very good somber mourners because we couldn't stop laughing at everything. As pinkoid pointed out to me..there was SOME people at the protests that seemd to be "cruising for love" and we tryed to avoid eye contact with them. Then there was the creepy protester that showed us "pornography" (a pic of Osama Bin Laden screwing George W. up the ass) and kept saying to us "You get it right?" and we got it and wanted him to go away. He was strange. The other side (Pro Bush) was represented (but only in very small numbers)....At one point I looked over towards the large group of protesters that were closest to the street/intersection and then I saw these two beefy guys that were holding up a GIGANTIC banner that said "These People Hate America" and then the protesters noticed THEIR sign and there was a little shouting going on and I thought there might be a RUMBLE, but there wasn't. Instead...there seemed to be a banner vs. sign fight, and the Pro-Bush Banner was almost knocked off it's poles, which was funny. THEN came another group of PRO Bushies in the form of a HUGE monster truck that was painted with a flag motif. It was cracking me up for some reason. The sound system from the truck was blaring traditional inauguration music and a man was standing in the back holding up a George W cardboard figure and there were about 4 giants flags also standing up in the truck. Many protesters (not pinkoid and I, though...we were far too amused and civilized) started flipping off the truck and it's occupants.

Eventually it got dark and chilly so pinkoid and I decided to leave. All in all, it was sort of fun and sort of...lacking at point?? I don't know what my expectations of it were.

Last night I dreamed that I seemed to be living out of my car (I don't even HAVE a car in real life) because I kept retrieving hygiene/bathing supplies and changes of clothes out of the backseat of this car. Then I dreamed that pinkoid came up to me and she was acting really odd and I tried to get some info out of her, but she insisted that she was fine, but I knew she was lying and then she ran away from me. THEN I went up to this hot dog stand where they sold a variety of German sausages and the vendor was German and I thought he was cute, and so did this other girl standing around and we were both trying to get him to go on a date with us, and I was saying "You either have to go on a date with BOTH of us at the same time...or you don't get to go out with EITHER of us" and he said "Forget it" and then I was trying to decide on what sort of sausage to get and he handed me a white one and I remember saying in German "Was ist das?" or something like that.

Well, I think I might see what is at the dollar theater today and go see a movie. Other than that..I have no plans.
