2006-02-21 : The White Eagle
We ended up going up to Portland Friday night and staying at The White Eagle Rock-n-Roll Saloon and Hotel. Our neighbor had told us it was a cool place and it was.

It was in the industrial section of Portland and the small (but clean) room with a double bed only cost $45.00 (including tax) which is a DEAL.

The White Eagle is in a building that has been around since 1905 and the Tavern/Hotel was originally opened by two Polish immigrants. Back in it's hey-day, Polish immigrants would go there to drink after a hard day of labor and if they had enough money or knew the right person they could go upstairs with a "lady" (yup..brothel) or head downstairs to smoke a little Opium!!

A trolley used to run right by the White Eagle and there was a stop almost in front of the place. The conductor would yell out "Bucket Of Blood" at the stop because of the amount of brawls that went on inside and around the Saloon.

Supposedly The White Eagle is haunted by a prostitute who died and untimely and violent death. I thought the place was creepy (in a cool way) but I didn't get the feeling that it was haunted (I can usually "sense" these things) but who knows! You check in at the bar (which is a loud and confusing way to check in!) and then you get a key and the entrance to the hotel is a door next to the door to the bar.

The stairway up to the very narrow and dimly lit hallway (which gives access to all 11 rooms) is creaky and steep. Everything seemed clean but then again everything WAS extremely dimly lit, which gave this place a pretty creepy (as in "The Shining" or something) atmosphere. We stayed in a room entitled "Mr. Spaceman". The bathrooms are communal. There are two heads (very narrow little places!) and two little shower areas (with locking doors, thank god!)

Anyways, I'm out of time. A good time was had by us in Portland, not much else to say. We hung out with Jody and Elena. Nobody got overly drunk and I just hung around the house on President's Day not doing much of anything (which are the sort of days I really LOVE sometimes!)
